What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number obtained by the use of a person's height and weight. It is a screening measure which is utilized to classify people into different groups such as underweight, normal weight, overweight and obesity.

There is a standardized formula to determine BMI:

BMI= weight(kg)/ height (meter square)

Effects of Body Mass Index (BMI) on health

BMI must be taken in concert with other health exams to arrive at a final outcome.
1. Underweight (BMI <18.5)
Can result in: Malnutrition, weakened immune system and higher chances of osteoporosis.
2. Normal Weight (BMI 18.5-24.9)
Normal BMI reflects general good health. Diet, exercise and genes are of importance.
3. Overweight (BMI 25-29.9)
High BMI is associated with increasing the risk of high BP, diabetes and heart disease.
4. Obesity (BMI>30)
Obesity has a high risk of cardiovascular diseases, cancer and mental illnesses. There is increase in population of obese persons recently.

How to maintain Body Mass Index (BMI) within normal range

• Eat nutritional food rich which is rich in fruits, vegetables, Lean proteins,         whole grains.
• Exercise regularly to keep your body active.

•Good quality of sleep. Poor sleep will lead to weight gain.
• Drink sufficient water. It will aid in digestion and metabolism.
• Check BMI from time to time to remain on track.
